Whimsical Summer Wedding in South Carolina

Q & A with the Bride:

1. What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?

Chris and I live in Beaufort, and we wanted to show our guests why we love the area. Having the reception space overlook the historic downtown accomplished that goal — plus, it gave guests easy access to places to go after the reception. The ceremony and reception were within a block of each other, which meant we could all just walk over. It worked out great!

2. Which three details from your wedding were your favorites?

This is kind of cheating on this question, but I loved the way all our DIY decor worked together so well. When we were working on the individual items — or I discussed them with my mom and grandma — it was kind of hard to imagine just how the bunting, the hand painted wall hanging, the photo booth area, the flags and ribbon streamers, etc. would all come together with the curtains, table runners and centerpieces Southern Graces created. But in the end it was perfect — when we walked into the reception, I was so amazed with how it looked and could barely believe it was our own wedding!

Our stationery, which I designed myself, was a labor of love. From the save-the-dates to the invitations, the Quaker marriage certificate all the way to the table numbers and our guide and map in our welcome bags, it was more work than I thought it would be, but it turned out great. Designing it myself cut costs, gave us something truly unique, and let us really create the vibe we wanted for our wedding from the beginning. Plus, it gave me a chance to discover that I really enjoy expressing my creativity through paper goods. I’m trying to figure out how to keep that outlet now that I’m not planning our wedding!

The barbecue sauces! We loved our food in general (we keep talking about how we want to eat it every week forever), but the “his” mustard sauce, “hers” KC style sauce, and “theirs” Cheerwine sauce was such a fun way to nod toward both our backgrounds and our combined present, and let our guests customize their meal. I even had a few Midwest friends say the KC sauce tasted like Gates’. If you know Kansas City barbecue, you know that means it was amazing.

3. Give us the one moment in your wedding you can’t stop thinking about. 

Eating ice cream between the ceremony and the reception. It was a spur of the moment decision. We walked past one of our favorite ice cream shops while taking some photos, and Chris — somewhat jokingly — asked if I wanted some. I said (a very emphatic) yes, and Paige was on board, so we did it. The whole day had been so crazy; this was one nice bit of normal for us. Sharing a scoop at a place we went during one of the first days we spent together when we started dating was also very sweet. Plus, you can’t beat ice cream when it’s 90 degrees outside!

Whimsical Rustic Spring Wedding in Florida

Q & A with the Bride:

What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?

We knew about this place first, and loved it but wanted to find something more wild. After searching all over Tallahassee we were just drawn back to Lichgate and its sweet cabin and huge live oak. It just looked like a fairytale.

Which three details from your wedding were your favorites?

We loved the handmade bananagrams tiles laser cut by Matt’s brother and my best friend, Michael Taylor; the individually bought tea sets that we turned into candles (which were our favors), and the white lights strung over the reception, particularly over the dance floor and under the big tree.

If you could offer one piece of advice for other couples planning their wedding, what would it be?

People say it all of the time, but seriously, get someone to run the wedding the day of. My best friend/MOH planned the entire wedding, but her and her boyfriend tag-teamed running the actual wedding that night. She had a schedule for everyone and everything. If she wasn’t there that day nothing would have run nearly as smoothly as it did. 

Give us the one moment in your wedding day you can’t stop thinking about.

We keep randomly bursting out with, “It was so perfect, It was so beautiful!.” But the funniest part is, after all of the planning, we forgot to rent cups! So everyone drank out of champagne flutes!

What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?

We visited a number of venues around the city and none of them had the character of the Berkeley Street Church. That unique, vintage feel really went along with what we wanted out of our wedding – a vintage-chic look that only this particular venue could help us achieve.

Which three details from your wedding were your favorites?

  1. We made our own wine for the wedding and created custom labels based on the names of each of our two cats, Dorito and Pinchy. The white wine was called Dorito Vineyards, and the red, Sir Pinchington Estates.
  2. The old-fashioned photo booth was the perfect fit for our theme, and guests could sign a fantastic guest book with each of their pictures available in there immediately.
  3. Our custom-made cake toppers based on our Xbox 360 avatars

Give us the one moment in your wedding day you can’t stop thinking about.

My husband and I wrote our own vows and unbeknownst to each other ended up copying each other in one key line – that we would always be each other’s “Player 2.” The combination of surprise and the reaction of our guests was one of the most memorable parts of the whole day.

Eclectic Winter Wedding in New Jersey

Q & A with the Bride:

What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?

It was just special. We knew Liberty House was our place from just looking at the photos. The view of downtown Manhattan as a backdrop was stunning along with the high open beamed ceilings and surrounding candlelight made it so romantic and intimate.

Which three details from your wedding were your favorites?

  1. Table Numbers & Escort Cards. Our table numbers were handmade by my artistic dad. He burned all of the details by hand for every single table and handmade the escort cardholder which took weeks of hard work.  All of this time and dedication in making these details perfect for us made these details even more special.
  2. Taxi Cab Limo. Our transportation for the wedding party was an old school taxi cab limo that spiced up your typical wedding transportation. It brought the city feel to life and gave such a fun, lighthearted feeling to the wedding party during our trips to the photos, ceremony and venue.
  3. The Music. Our band was amazing. My dad is a musician, so music was number was on his list. We had weekly calls with the band to make sure they knew our song list and style. There was not one person that didn’t tell us how fantastic the music was at the reception. They made it a party to remember! We also had slipper socks (since it was winter, we didn’t go with flip flops) for our guests to keep on dancing even when their feet were tired!

Give us the one moment in your wedding day you can’t stop thinking about.

The moment we heard our wedding song – “Soul Sister” by Train. We picked the song so long ago because we loved the story it told. We had listened to it over and over again. When it finally came on at the wedding, it all became so real and our story came full circle. Also,  while there was a room full of people staring at us, it felt like it was just the two of us in the room at the moment.

Whimsical Bird-Themed Summer Wedding in New York

Q & A with the Bride:

What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?

We wanted an outdoor wedding ceremony to capture our “love bird” theme and we thought The Powelton Club would be the perfect place. Also, the place is extra special to us because my in-laws had their wedding reception there in 1975.

Which three details from your wedding were your favorites?

1. Cake: This is where it all started. I saw a picture of a cake online that had a “love birds” topper and that gave me the idea of having a “love bird” theme. I wanted a replica of the cake and I sure got it!

2. Floral arrangements and decor: Our florist did an amazing job incorporating all the elements and transforming our venue into a magical place.

3. Wedding dress: I exchanged my dress not once, but twice. It is true, the third time’s a charm! I fell in love with the third dress instantly. It felt like my dress was the piece to pull off our “love bird” theme.

Give us the one moment from your wedding day that you can’t stop thinking about

The outdoor ceremony. It was picture perfect! We saw some tears from our families and friends (not to mention my own) when we recited our vows to each other, and we know those were tears of joy.
