Q & A with the Bride

What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?

We had a clear vision for our day – romantic elegance, and I knew that I wanted very soft neutral colors.  DeLille Cellars in Redmond, Washington was perfect for our vision and it was just the right size for our small guest count of 58. 

Which details from your wedding were your favorites?

Driftwood Arbor – In March, Chad and I drove out to Oak Harbor, WA and we spent the day collecting driftwood on the beach.  We constructed our wedding arbor out of the driftwood that we collected and we had our florist decorate it with flowers on our wedding day.  As an added personal touch, we carved our initials and our wedding date in a heart onto our arbor.

Moss Letters – I love the look of Moss Letters and so I created my own for our wedding day and we hung them on the barn on our wedding day.

Bride and groom signs – I created signs for the back of our chairs that said Bride and Groom.

Welcome boxes for our out of town guests – We have quite a few guests coming in from out of town.  I wanted to do something for them to welcome them when they arrived so I created welcome boxes and arranged to have them placed in each guests hotel room before they arrived.  In each welcome box there was a map and some information of the city, along with some goodies and a mini first aid kit just in case.

Chalkboard Sign – I bought a frame from the craft store and spray painted it ivory and then glued in a chalkboard I found at the hardware store.  I then created a sign outlining the day’s events for our guests.  It also acted as a directional sign, so that our guests could find their way around.

This year, we published over 200 real weddings on this blog – from glamorous affairs to laid-back celebrations, we’ve truly seen it all. But some weddings and details really stood out, and we wanted to share them with you.

Modern and Cheeky Wedding Stationery

The wedding of two graphic designers in Palm Springs, California featured some of the coolest details we’ve ever seen. In particular, we loved the paper goods – from the aisle markers to the menus, the contemporary design and informal language really sets the tone for a totally relaxed affair and showcases the couple’s sense of humor. Q & A with the Bride: 

1. Which three details from your wedding were your favorites?

1. I LOVED all the details we brought in. From the burlap and lace to the chunky, wood rounds at the base of the birch-wrapped vases filled with the most amazing display of flowers to the mason jars with candles in them.

2. Our dessert table was amazing! I wanted it to be fun yet elegant. There was something for everyone’s sweet tooth.

3. The guest table was another one of my favorites. Since we invited our family and friends to bring their children, we wanted them to have something to do. We had “wedding-themed” activity books with crayons and special treats tucked inside little burlap bags. And for our adult guests we had homemade strawberry jam that I made along with my mom. It was just a nice, simple way of saying thank you for spending the day to celebrate with us.

2. Give us one moment in your wedding day you cannot stop thinking about.

Knowing my mom had broken her hip two days before my wedding, there was no guarantee she was going to be coming to our wedding. And as any bride would do, I was praying for some kind of miracle all day. And it was granted! My mom was delivered by ambulance with two nurses by her side to aide in her needs the entire night. They wheeled her into a room where we had my hair and makeup stylist and some girlfriends getting her dressed and beautiful. Everything that night just made me appreciate life and everyone around me just a little bit more than I had before.

Q & A with the Bride:

1. What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?

We wanted a simple yet classic look for our venue and something that also complimented our style. We loved the old brick and the white framed windows of The Hollywood Schoolhouse. We also thought it would  be fun to get married in an old schoolhouse because my husband is a teacher.

2. Which three details from your wedding were your favorites?

1.  Our wedding colors were simply a combination of our favorite colors (my favorite color is grey and Scott’s is orange).

2.  We wanted to tie our last name into the theme to really make it our own (Stencil), so we used various stencils for our signs, table signs and labels.

3. Scott’s grandfather is a retired reverend. It was so incredible to have a family member marry us.

What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?

The view from the venue is breathtaking!  I will go out on a limb and say its the best in the Lake Chelan area! I knew right away when I started planning our wedding, that I wanted a place that had amazing natural beauty, ambiance and a romantic feeling. I looked at indoor venues, and some outdoor before finding Benson Vineyards, but, none could compare to the feeling I got when we were there. It felt like ‘us’.

Which three details from your wedding were your favorites?

I put a lot of thought into my guest tables and centerpieces. I figured that while I didn’t want huge, expensive centerpieces, I wanted them to be memorable. I had seen an idea online to cut the bottoms off of wine bottles, and put candles in them. My dad cut all the bottles for me and we learned pretty early in that real candles were not going to work, so, flameless ones were used.  I love the way candlelight, even outdoors, creates such a romantic ambiance.  Each place setting was saved with a menu and a wine charm attached that I had hand beaded, with the guest’s name on it.

Another detail very special to me was our wine box.  We wanted to do something unique and personal during our ceremony. Our officiant, pastor Craig, suggested a wonderful idea. A box that would hold a bottle of wine, two glasses, and two letters written each by the bride and groom to each other. We would lock the box together during the ceremony, and open it together on our 5th anniversary. How perfect for a winery wedding! Our moms held the letters we had written to each other, and gave them to us, along with a hug, and we locked the box together.

One of the most important parts of the day for me, was the memory of my friend, Heidi.  She was one of my best friends since college, and had tragically passed away a few years ago. I wanted her to be part of my day though.  I had saved a bridesmaid spot for her, which made our numbers uneven, but, I couldn’t fill it with anyone else.
