With deepest sympathy, one of the most talented fashion and bridal industry designers, Oscar de la Renta, died at the age of 82 battling cancer on Monday. Not only was he favored by red carpet actresses but also First Ladies too from Jackie Kennedy and Hillary Clinton. And more recently brides everywhere — including Amal Clooney! De la Renta will always be remembered for shaping couture clothing in the 21st century. So, that’s why our Fashion Editor, wanted to showcase a few of his most iconic (and classic) runway looks.

Punk pop star Gwen Stefani surprised us all when she walked down the aisle wearing an off-the-shoulder silk faille wedding dress complete with an ombre train at her September 2002 wedding to Gavin Rossdale in London’s Covent Garden. The custom dress and antique lace veil were both created by former Christian Dior designer John Galliano and donated to the Victoria & Albert Museum after the wedding. “But it’s a work of art,” said Stefani in Elle UK magazine. “It needed to be seen.” It’s safe to say she started the pink wedding dress trend we’ve seen other celebrities wear on their big day, including Jessica Biel, Reese Witherspoon, and Anne Hathaway. This week on the blog, we’re looking back at some of the world’s most iconic wedding dresses that have recently re-emerged on the runways. Who can forget when Kate Middleton married Prince William at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011? Throughout their six-month engagement, Kate’s dress designer was kept a secret. It wasn’t until she walked down the aisle that Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton announced she was behind the custom v-neck, long sleeved wedding gown, which featured a full skirt and almost 7-foot long train. This sought-after classic was inspired by nature and the Victorian age. Details included hand-cut flowers embroidered on the lace and 58 buttons fastened by Rouleau loops on the back of her dress. However, Kate’s dress wasn’t the only one that stole the spotlight. Her younger sister, Pippa, wore a cowl neck, capped-sleeved dress that fitted to her body.
