Jessica and Marq were married at Rancho Valencia in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. on February 15. “It was the architectural and design details of the sunrise room that made us know that it was the one,” Jessica said. The bride wore a v-neck tea-length wedding gown, accessorized with a jeweled sash and a floral hair pin in her half-up/half-down ‘do, while the groom wore a black suit, accessorized with a striped tie. Her bouquet featured an abundance of tulips and anemones with a hint of greenery. The ceremony took place outside with guests standing. “It was very non-traditional with no aisle, no chairs, and no bridal party,” she said. “Immediately after we were pronounced husband and wife, I felt so much love,” Jessica said. “It was amazing. So many tears of joy at that moment.” Yummy hors d’oeuvres were passed during cocktail hour along with flutes of champagne. The reception was lit with lantern chandeliers to create a romantic ambiance overhead each tablescape, which were decorated with uniquely patterned charger plates and navy blue escort cards, menu cards, and table numbers. For desserts, there was a three-tiered cake, macarons, chocolate-covered strawberries, and more. Never can have too many sweets, right?

Q & A with the Bride:

1. What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?

Joe and I both grew up in Maryland and had happy memories of the Eastern Shore from our childhood. St. Michaels was a great place that our whole family could get away for the weekend and really celebrate. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum provided a beautiful and unique location to host a wedding.

2. Which three details from your wedding were your favorites?

1. The hanging lanterns. They made the tent and dance floor feel magical.

2. My veil. It was originally my grandmother’s and then my mother’s.

3. The umbrellas. I hated the rain, but they made for some great pictures.

3. If you could offer one piece of advice for other couples planning their wedding, what would it be?

My advice would be know that you can’t control everything.  There will be something that won’t go as planned.  Your wedding only happens once, make the best of it and have fun! Up to the day before my wedding there was a 0% chance of rain, we ended up with over 7 inches.  For an outdoor wedding, it could have ruined our day but looking back I wouldn’t change a thing. It just made it that much more memorable.

4. Give us the one moment in your wedding that you can’t stop thinking about.

Our first dance was one of the happiest moments of my life. Another great and funny memory was walking from the cocktail hour to the tent with my husband and his groomsmen trying to keep me dry in the rain. It was raining so hard that it just had to become funny.

Q & A with the Bride:

1. What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?

Its location.  We wanted our wedding to have a traditional New England summertime feel to it.  We chose a picturesque church for our ceremony and a beautiful beach area in which to do our portraits, and the country club is in close proximity to both.  Our venue is also representative of us as a couple – we love to play sports and spend time outside, and the country club is set on a golf course and has an indoor and outdoor component.

2. Which four details from your wedding were your favorites?

1. Flowers — simply gorgeous.

2. Cupcakes — adorable and tasty.

3. Stationary — the Green Kangaroo’s invitations, programs, place cards, and table numbers were flawless.

4. Bridesmaids and Groomsmen Attire — our sisters and brothers comprised our bridal party, and they looked perfect. Each bridesmaid wore something reflective of her style yet in keeping with our theme and color.

3. If you could offer one piece of advice for other couples planning their wedding, what would it be?

Invest in an amazing photographer.  Although you are always told that a wedding goes by quickly, you don’t fully understand how true that statement is until you experience your own wedding. By investing in an amazing photographer, as we did with Candace Jeffery, you are instilled with confidence that your beautiful memories will be captured in photos, and you are given something tangible to forever cherish.

4. Give us the one moment in your wedding you can’t stop thinking about.

Our sunset photos, which took place on the golf course about halfway through out reception.  This was the first moment that my husband and I got to be alone with one another, yet we could still hear the excitement of our family and friends in the background.  It was also a moment in which we got to reflect on the beauty of our day, which as cliché as it sounds, truly was the best day of our lives.

Q & A with the Bride:

1. What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?

It was the perfect combination of two things that made us love the venue.  Most importantly, I’d say was being right on the water – the beautiful view of the river was captivating.  (Sadly, we weren’t able to enjoy the outdoors as much as we would have liked due to the heavy rain that day.)  The second thing was the rustic feel of the reception room – we loved the unique vaulted ceilings, chandeliers and antique wooden bar.

2. Which three details from your wedding were your favorites?

1. My bridesmaids wore different colored shoes, which were brought together by the floral arrangements

2. The centerpieces – many people collected clear and blue vases for us over the past year, so that we could have the eclectic, colorful arrangements I had imagined.  My dad made the wood circles.  And lastly, the table numbers were photos of Bill and I at that age.

3. The arbor – my dad made it with wood and wrought iron (his signature touch since he is a farrier/blacksmith).  We love that we will be able to have this piece from our wedding day in our backyard.

3. Give us the one moment in your wedding day you can’t stop thinking about.

Our love story during the ceremony – our officiant, who is a romance novelist, wrote a “love story” from questionnaires we filled out, which basically told the history of our relationship.  The story she created was amazing, and it made our guests laugh quite a bit.  It epitomizes the atmosphere that we wanted for our wedding – thoughtful, personalized and fun.

Q & A with the Bride:

1. What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?

We wanted our feet in the sand and the gorgeous scenery of Hawaii in the background. Although the groom is from Oahu originally, we had several out-of-town guests in attendance and wanted to give them an unforgettable (and non-Waikiki tourist) experience. Kualoa Ranch was magical!

2. Which four details from your wedding were your favorites?

1. Having the guests and wedding party board a boat to head over the fish pond for the Secret Island ceremony and back for the reception was breathtaking.

2. The food was incredible. An upscale luau with simple yet elegant food. Delicious!

3. My custom handmade dress. I designed my dress and beaded it with over 30 hours of love! It was so beautiful and comfortable.

4. We had a luau performed by Chief Sielu and his team of performers. What an amazing fire show for our guests.

3. Give us the one moment from your wedding day you can’t stop thinking about.

Seeing our smiling faces in every photo, some even in hysterical laughter. We had such a wonderful time and didn’t want it to end.
