Theia - The White Collection by Theia is ideal for the bride who loves the feminine details of traditional wedding gowns, yet seeks a modern edge in form and function. Theia even designed a sequined and hand-embroidered sweatshirt for the bride that really wants to make a statement. We also saw gorgeous silk organza, delicate touches of gold, satin petals, and a ballgown with hidden pockets! Now, how genius is that?

Iconic Wedding Dresses: Kate Middleton

This week on the blog, we’re looking back at some of the world’s most iconic wedding dresses that have recently re-emerged on the runways. Who can forget when Kate Middleton married Prince William at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011? Throughout their six-month engagement, Kate’s dress designer was kept a secret. It wasn’t until she walked down the aisle that Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton announced she was behind the custom v-neck, long sleeved wedding gown, which featured a full skirt and almost 7-foot long train. This sought-after classic was inspired by nature and the Victorian age. Details included hand-cut flowers embroidered on the lace and 58 buttons fastened by Rouleau loops on the back of her dress. However, Kate’s dress wasn’t the only one that stole the spotlight. Her younger sister, Pippa, wore a cowl neck, capped-sleeved dress that fitted to her body. Check out our favorite look-a-likes above!

Sheer Beauty

Adding volume as well as a bit of mystery, tulle overskirts have become a must-have detail on Fall 2013 wedding dresses. Designers are showing single layers cut on the bias, hemmed to add a bit of structure, or sheared and layered, as seen at Marchesa (above left). The tulle skirt doesn’t quite cover the beauty of the detailing beneath, whether lace or beading, but creates a thin veil covering the design ever so slightly.

So what silhouettes work best with this trend? All of them! Voluminous ball gowns, sexy mermaids and slinky sheaths all were shown with tulle overskirts. And for brides who want a different look for the ceremony and reception a few designers made removable tulle skirts that completely changed the gown’s look from solemn to celebratory.

Shown above:

This modest floor-length lace gown with long sleeves and a crew neck by Monique Lhuillier has a white cummerbund-style detail at the waist and a single layer of tulle cut on a bias.

Reem Acra’s ornately beaded bodice is paired with a clean white skirt with a layer of pleated tulle.

For a chic, short look Marchesa’s modest lace knee-length dress has a multi-layered hi-lo tulle overskirt making it the perfect style for an afternoon wedding or reception after-party dress.

Five Fabulous Looks from Monique Lhuillier

Posted by Bridal Market on Oct 20, 2011

Expected to be one of the highlights of the weekend, Monique Lhuillier didn’t disappoint with 25 stunning gowns. The designer created what she calls a ‘floral fantasy’ with a ‘featherweight quality’ to ‘dreamy and romantic’ gowns. Here are a few we’re sure you’ll love too:

The Half-Slit: Many designers showed some leg this season, and while most slits started about mid-thigh, Lhuillier kept things a little more modest with a slit that began right above the knee. And while I think the high slit looks amazing on a lot of gowns we saw some ceremony venues may not allow such a sexy, aka revealing, design.

Stamped Fabric: Can you see the rose imprint in this fabric? Not the three-dimensional rose in the hand-tufted skirt but the letterpress-like pattern? I’ve never seen that type of fabric before, and if I have it wasn’t as memorable as this design. The fabric was used in this ball gown and a modified trumpet-gown.

Draped Bodice: Wow, this dress is unbelievable, and if you want to show off your fabulous figure than this is the dress to do it in. The asymmetrical draped bodice with elongated torso has a trumpet skirt and portrait neckline.

The Kate Effect: While Kate Middleton’s wedding dress did spark a few copycat designs right after her wedding to Prince William they were not on the runway this season. The inspiration many designers found from the Duchess’ McQueen gown were arm coverage and creative ways to add coverage to a wedding dress. Some designers added a type of sleeve and others a type of cover-up. This gown features a tulle coverlet embroidered with crystals. As a coverlet I’m assuming it’s removable, but I don’t know for sure.

Lace on Horsehair: You may not know this but Monique Lhuillier came to fame years ago with her corseted gowns with a sash at the waist and this modern interpretation of her original best selling design is quite unique. Several gowns in the collection featured a horsehair sash with bow at the waist with the ends of the sash appliqued with lace. A very modern design, but yet timeless too.

Bridal Market Recap: Trend Report {Part II}

Now that you’ve seen some of the best looks on the runway, here’s a look at the overall trends.  There were some obvious ones like lace and tulle dresses, and then some more subtle detailing such as Obi bows that after a few shows we started to see.  Here’s Part II of WeddingWire’s Bridal Market Trend Report:

Floral Details

About two years ago fabric flower embellishments took the bridal world by storm and this detail doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon.  This season designers went big, featuring large floral designs on skirts, one-shoulder necklines and at the waist.  For brides not looking for a such big embellishment there were also a number of wedding gowns with smaller floral details as well.
