Q & A with the Bride:

1. What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?

We really wanted a location that had two things: a view of the ocean, and a venue with a lot of character.  We wanted it to be an older building with dark wood, unique charm and a feeling like it could be someone’s home.  We wanted our guests traveling from outside of New England to have a true feeling of what it might be like to spend an evening along the Maine coastline.  The York Harbor Reading Room had everything we were looking for and a wonderful team that is known for putting on a wonderful wedding.

2. Which three details from your wedding were your favorites?

One of my favorite details of our wedding was our cake topper.  It was special to me, and a great addition to our vintage-inspired, romantic wedding.  Our cake topper was first used at my grandparents wedding back in 1956.  It’s just a simple bride and groom figurine, but it holds sentimental value that is priceless.  Another detail from my wedding that I really loved was our flowers.  We chose an excellent florist, who did an incredible job with all things floral:  bouquets, centerpieces, ceremony decor.   We wanted clean, romantic, beach-washed floral details for our wedding, and the flowers were an excellent way to decorate and help create the vintage feeling.  Lastly.  I really had fun creating all of our wedding stationary.  Again, we wanted a vintage feel for every piece: the save-the-date, invitation and thank you card.   We were able to tie our wedding theme into each piece, and we were really happy how they turned out.

3. Give us the one moment from your wedding you can’t stop thinking about.

On the days leading up to our wedding, everyone kept telling us to just take five minutes out of the reception and enjoy the day. I was prepared for the day to move quickly and was so nervous about the weather, about being on time, about making sure everyone was enjoying themselves.  My bridesmaid and best friend Jen kept reminding me to enjoy! It was my wedding day!  There were a few minutes where my new husband and I took some time to walk on the beach between the ceremony and reception.  It was just us, and we really were able to spend some time together before the dinner and reception.  We’ll always have those memories, and I am so happy that we took the time out of our day for that.

Q & A with the Bride:

1. What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?

The best quality our venue had was all-inclusiveness! We were able to have our ceremony, cocktail hour and reception all in one location. Having it all in different rooms of the same hotel allowed one style to permeate throughout the entire event, the wedding to proceed from event to event seamlessly, and there was a place for everyone to stay after the celebrations, which we were thankful for because we had a blizzard that night!

2. Which three details from your wedding were your favorites?

1. Our very personal ceremony. Our closest friend (he introduced us to one another) was the officiant and family and friends wrote the readings for us.
2. The very emotional father/daughter dance that I shared with my father.
3. The dinner. It was long enough that we were able to visit with the family and friends, who were there, and still have time to eat!

3. If you could offer one piece of advice for other couples planning their wedding, what would it be?

Get married off season and shorten your wedding date! We had the best service from all of our vendors because they had nothing else planned. We recieved discounts and also had a faster turnaround for what we ordered. Also shortening my wedding date allowed me to make a decision and drop it. If I had had a full year to plan it would have made me crazy trying to pack more in!

4. Give us the one moment from your wedding that you can’t stop thinking about.

Finally putting on my wedding dress! My mother and I had made it together from a vintage vogue pattern. It was my dream dress, and my mother had put countless hours into it. The moment she zipped it up, I let out a big sigh because I have never felt better!

Fabulous, Elegantly Modern Wedding in Maine

Rick & Jon

October 1

Kennebunkport, Maine

Design:
The design goal was to create a masculine, tailored and elegant dinner party.  We achieved this by building a glass-walled tent with dark hardwood floors and selecting a blend of mirrored and draped tables.  The bar and chandelier were selected to anchor the room while the white flowers and candles softened the space.  Chef Cartwright prepared an outstanding five-course tasting menu with wine pairings.

Who are We:
Rick and Jon were introduced by a common friend while traveling on a business trip.  It didn’t take too long before they realized they had met their best friend and partner.  They live in Boston and have a summer home in Kennebunk.  After looking for a venue in Boston, they soon realized that nothing fit the style of the event they wanted to have and decided to plan a wedding in Kennebunkport where they could create a memorable party.  The couple was married in Massachusetts in a private ceremony at the Copley Plaza Hotel on 9/28 with a celebration of their marriage in Kennebunkport on 10/1.

Anna and Sean were has a destination wedding in Northport, Maine. They are both such warm, kind people who just light up when they see each other. Sean immediately hugged me upon my arrival at the wedding, and it was obvious throughout the day that their friends and family members all shared the same warm and happy spirit. -Justine, of Justine Johnson Photography

Real Wedding: Megan + Mike

Megan + Mike

Concord, MA

October 2010

Megan and Mike live out in San Francisco and were planning their wedding in Concord, where Megan grew up.  The bridesmaids have been her best friends since Pre-School (and one of them is WeddingWire’s very own Molly L!).  Each Bridesmaid wore a necklace that Megan had made for them.  Instead of renting a limo for the day, they hired antique cars, so Megan showed up to the church in a 1928 Ford Model A, such a unique idea!
