Strapless is still the most popular neckline but coming in at a close second is the illusion neckline. Brides who want something revealing but don’t want to worry about pulling the bodice of their dress up throughout the night will love the creative ways designers are using lace and embellishing tulle to add modesty or glamour to a wedding dress.

The three examples shown here are all sleeveless gowns, but an illusion neckline can lead into off-the-shoulder, capped or even long sleeves, usually made of the same see-through fabric: lace, tulle, or net.

Here are three examples of how an illusion neckline can be blinged out or understated:

Jenny Packham, known for her vintage-inspired looks, and dressing Catherine Duchess of Cambridge, placed crystals over sheer netting to create the illusion that the bride is wearing three necklaces with her wedding gown.

Ines Di Santo appliqued a delicate lace with fabric flowers dotted with crystals, continuing the floral embellishment theme on this blush colored ball gown.

For a simple and elegant look, Christos placed lace along the shoulder and crew neckline made of tulle.

Designed by Amsale Abrerra, the Christos line is for the dreamy, romantic bride. The collection is always a favorite with light and airy fabrics, delicate embellishments and classic silhouettes. Here are a few designs we loved:

The Pippa Effect: Forget Kate, lace sleeves didn’t make a big splash at market, but her sister’s cowl neckline slim-fitting gown sure did. This chiffon column gown with cowl neckline and lace inset immediately made us tweet “Pippa!” Let’s face it, not many brides will put their ‘maids in white, but if you were a fan of Pippa Middleton’s maid-of-honor dress you may want to try on this gown. (We heard her secret to that perfect fit was the right undergarments. We recommend Spanx.)

Illusion Closures: We can’t remember the last time we saw such a simple, yet chic closure to the back of a dress. This beaded trumpet gown has a bateau illusion neckline with a simple white ribbon bow closure at the nape of the neck.

Lace as Illusion: While we’ve seen a lot of illusion necklines this market — dare we say trend? — this lace illusion neckline is more romantic than simple net or tulle. Adding to the traditional lace fabric is the traditional bridal button closure.

Lace Hem Detailing: You really have to see this dress up close to be as blown away as we were by the beauty of the detailing. The three-tiers of this organza ball gown have Chantilly lace applique embellishments that are beautiful. Really, it’s quite stunning.

Petal & Floral Embellishments: Another must-have detail of the spring 2012 season is small floral embellishments. This soft colored gown, it’s lighter than a blush, featured beaded flower and petal degrade on the bodice and scattered over the tulle skirt.

The Spring 2012 Christos collection is a mixture of lightweight fabrics and unexpected details.  Designer Amsale Abrerra always presents a collection of romantic and elegant wedding gowns that are always at the top of my “best of the season” list.

There are 12 dresses in the collection, here are five that stood out:

1 – If you’re looking for a light and airy wedding gown but want something more than a clean tulle bodice and skirt, the “Nevine” dress is adorned with organza embroidery, which adds a layer of texture.
