After attending New York Bridal Market twice this past year, you can only guess how many wedding gowns and dresses we saw come down the runways. Thousands, maybe? From substantial halter necklines and shimmering fabrics to scalloped hemlines and even cool capes, be sure to choose only the BEST ones for your bridesmaids. Bonus: Our Fashion Editor suggests what to wear with ‘em too!

Five Fabulous Looks from Alvina Valenta

In what I think was her most stunning collection to date, designer Jessica Williams created a group of romantic and dreamy gowns for Spring 2012. Voluminous skirts, lace detailing and illusion necklines were some of the design elements she used. And in addition to wedding dresses the collection included a handful of stylish looks for bridesmaids too. Here are five looks we loved:

Dreamy Gowns: The finale dress tops our list of five favorites. This ivory, one-shoulder tulle ball gown has a Chantilly lace bodice and a tulle illusion overlay. The tiered tulle skirt is edged with horsehair, this season’s trimming must-have.

Illusion Capes: When one thinks of a cape the image of Little Red Riding Hood’s heavy outerwear comes to mind, but Williams designed the reverse. For modesty and coverage, not the elements, she showed two tulle capes, one adorned with crystals and the other with lace.

Metallic: A detail that comes and goes with each passing market season, silver and gold accents were not as popular as they were in past years, but these two gowns featuring silver jacquard on the bodice (left) and silver metallic cashmere (right) are not overdone and are both quite elegant designs for a formal or more casual affair. And while I’m assuming the short one is for a bride it works as a bridesmaid dress too.

Asymmetrical Detailing: Seen on a number of bridal gowns this season, the asymmetrical detailing on the bodice comes over a sweetheart neckline and is paired with a floor-length trumpet skirt.

Small Peplum: Last season and the one before featured a lot of gowns with large and oversized peplums. This fluted gown features a smaller one extending from the jeweled bodice. And we just love the pale candlelight color too.

Bridal Market Recap: Trend Report {Part II}

Now that you’ve seen some of the best looks on the runway, here’s a look at the overall trends.  There were some obvious ones like lace and tulle dresses, and then some more subtle detailing such as Obi bows that after a few shows we started to see.  Here’s Part II of WeddingWire’s Bridal Market Trend Report:

Floral Details

About two years ago fabric flower embellishments took the bridal world by storm and this detail doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon.  This season designers went big, featuring large floral designs on skirts, one-shoulder necklines and at the waist.  For brides not looking for a such big embellishment there were also a number of wedding gowns with smaller floral details as well.

Bridal Market Recap: JLM Couture {Part II}

Here’s Part II of my review of the JLM Couture collections with gowns from Alvina Valenta, Tara Keely and Lazaro:

Tara Keely – You don’t see many ball gowns with box pleats these days.  I think when I started working in bridal you saw a lot more of them.  This mikado satin ball gown has a pleated bodice with sweetheart neckline, a crystal belt for just a touch of sparkle and a full ball gown skirt with a chapel train and pockets, which I’ll discuss next.

Bridal Market Recap: JLM Couture {Part I}

JLM Couture is comprised of five lines:  Jim Hjelm, Blush, Alvina Valenta, Tara Keely and Lazaro.  And in addition to wedding gowns they also design bridesmaid dresses.

The Fall 2011 collections have something for every bride, no matter what wedding-day look you’re going for — glamorous, romantic, dramatic, classic and even destination brides.

I divided the JLM post into two, so here’s post #1 with my top picks for the Jim Hjelm and Blush lines:

1 – Instead of full blooms adorning your wedding dress opt for scattered petals instead.  You get the same spring-y, garden feel but it’s more subtle and a sweet look.
