Whether you’re planning a wedding on a budget or not, you still want your guests to be entertained and kept on the dance floor all night long. Here’s some tips to help you decide between a DJ or band:

1. Ask for recommendations.

2. See them perform live before you hire them.

3. Consider the size of your venue.

4. Think about playing music for all age groups.

The picture of the DJ above doesn’t correctly represent the majority of the DJs these days. For a clean and tidy appearance, most professional DJs hide the equipment and wires in the case, behind table skirts or facades. The DJ lighting effects are sometimes hung on a tripod or set upon lighting truss with the wires covered by Scrim or cloth wrap that may give a glow effect with the lights.

Serious misrepresentation of DJs in this blog. Any professional DJ will make sure that all wires and cables are hidden or stowed neatly. And yes, we put our lighting effects on a tripod or truss. Another thing, most events that DJs work are “private” events which means that someone can’t just drop by to see them live. Just check out the reviews on WW and, if possible, ask the DJ for references. Myself, I am more than happy to provide them.

Live music is great energy. However, most cannot MC to save their lives. Also, DJs can play a wide variety of music. Whereas, Bands cannot. I suggest interviews. I would avoid live auditions for DJs. Any DJ that would let you crash one of their weddings might do it to you. I don’t think you want a stranger poking around at your wedding taking the attention off of you.

Have you ever even seen a professional DJ/MC/Coordinator at work?
This is such a misrepresentation of a professional DJ… no Professional DJ would
ever have lights sitting on top of a table with wires showing. If you wish to
help people understand the differences between a band and DJ then please show
them a professional band and DJ. I
started off playing drums, guitar and saxophone playing in several bands before
becoming a DJ. While a band provides that live energy feel a professional DJ
can keep the crowd dancing by playing all their favorite genres of music
something most bands cannot do. Would you really want the band or DJ to invite
people to your private wedding reception? Any professional would be more than
happy to provide videos of their performance as well as testimonials from past
clients…

I’m not into the Band vs. DJ argument much, but I will agree with the previous commenters, and more so, 2.5 of the 4 bullet points above have little nothing to do with answering the age old question DJ vs. Band. Also agree, that picture of the DJ is hideous – I feel like it’s Dems vs Repubs here Could at least show a real, professional dj to go against the real, professional band.
