Taryn & Mike
I am beyond excited to share today’s Real Wedding! Taryn & Mike’s day is one for the books; from the personalized details, to the gorgeous weather, to a magnificent venue, it had it all. On top of all the details, though, Taryn and Mike are two of the most amazing people I know. They would do anything for their family and friends, and made sure their day was not only an expression of their love to one another, but to everyone who was there to celebrate with them.
Our Q&A with the Bride:
What was the one thing about your venue that made you know it was the one?
We visited our venue in the dead of winter on a very grey day. Snow on the ground, no leaves, no sunlight. A staff member brought us out to the Beach House Ballroom garden, and we stood right where we would say our vows. We looked out and saw the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the view could not be beat. That, coupled with the amazing reviews and staff, we knew we had our place.
What three (3) details from your wedding were your favorites?
Wow. I’m not sure I can narrow it down to three! It was by far a perfect day that I thought described Mike and I to a “t”. But, if I had to pick…
Our printed items (Invitations, cupcake bags, favors) As a freelance graphic designer, I’ve designed a lot for other people’s weddings. I love how a good design can make something really stand out. I loved putting a bit of myself in my design of our wedding collateral. I especially loved the chevron bags we made that housed our favors – a $1 scratch-off lottery ticket and a new golden penny.
My bridesmaid’s dresses. I love how the designer, LulaKate, offers so many options for skirt/top. I wanted them all to feel beautiful and comfortable. With seven girls who all have different bodies, I’m not sure one dress can successfully do that. I think each dress they picked suited their style. I loved the color of them, it was a perfect shade of non-drab grey mixed with a hint of silver metallic. It was a great neutral for our coral accent color.
We couldn’t afford a string quartet for our cocktail hour. Instead, we had our DJ play music from the Vitamin String Quartet. It was all of our favorite pop and rock songs, done classically. I loved seeing the looks on our friends’ faces as they realized it wasn’t classical!
If you could offer one piece of advice for other couples planning their wedding, what would it be?
Relax! I have a mantra in my work life as a designer that I conveyed onto my wedding planning: Eventually, it all gets done. Sometimes, it’s stressful, or it’s late, or you don’t want to do it…but everything will be done and fall into place. The more you worry, the less you will enjoy such a fun and happy time in your life that will pass by quicker than the blink of an eye.
Give us the one moment in your wedding day you can’t stop thinking about.
Our first look. I was a bundle of nerves all day and I couldn’t wait to see Mike. Walking up to him with his back turned to me made everything seem so real. I’ll never forget the look on his face when he saw me. I love that we had some private moments to ourselves to just literally say “HI! OK- Let’s do this!!!” before the craziness began.
