Pamela and “Bubba” Mathis had their own fairytale wedding…sort of…

The Gwinnett Daily Post is reporting on a couple’s own idea of a unique wedding: Scattered, smothered, covered and hitched; Couple marries at Waffle House highlighting a couple’s wedding at the Waffle House. A busy schedule and some hick-ups along the way did not keep this couple from getting married on their dream day. On July 4th, the couples anniversary, the bride Pamela Christian woke up and decided she wanted to get married that day no matter what. After trying unsuccessfully to get off work in previous years on Independence Day, the bride got off work in the afternoon. They wasted no time and finally, after 9 years, get Pamela got married to George “Bubba” Mathis in the parking lot of the Waffle House.

The unique wedding was a hit and I think this is a great testament to the couples culture and what they are proud of, “I think it’s pretty redneck myself,” he said, laughing. “But I’m a redneck anyway, so,” says the groom.

If you know of a unique wedding location, leave a comment here with for everyone to enjoy.

And in the name of the maple syrup, I leave you this video:

Liene of Blue Orchid Designs wrote an honest and open post yesterday about how some (not all) wedding planners get kickbacks from other wedding vendors for having their brides book a particular vendor.  She talks about the dirty little secrets some wedding planners employ to earn extra cash at the expense of the bride.  She states that some vendors will raise their rates to brides to cover the kickbacks a wedding planner demands.  So in essence, you’re paying your wedding planner twice.

She also offers some advice on what to look for in your contract with a wedding planner and some advice on how to deal with a wedding planner that may be involved with this sort of practice.  It’s a good article to read for anyone who is considering using a wedding planner for their wedding.  Not all wedding planners do this, but it can’t hurt to read the fine print to ensure you’re not paying extra.

Wedding Sunset Calculator

Posted by Brian

As destination weddings are becoming increasingly popular, couples planning their ceremony may have activities, or the ceremony itself, planned around sunset. Lucky for everyone Weather.com has a sunset calculator to help with this very thing. Sunset probably doesn’t matter as much to summer weddings, but couples planning their weddings from October through April could benefit from knowing when sunset is.

Weather.com also contains tips for planning your destination wedding and honeymoons that can be helpful as well.

This weekend we released a few updates to our website that we’re really excited about. Here’s some high level details:

The first upgrade we made is online RSVP is now available via your wedding website. You have been asking for this feature and now you’ve got it. Online RSVP is a great way to save money if you don’t want to send return RSVP cards to your guest. Just have them RSVP online with your wedding website.

The second update is to our wedding vendor search page. We have stream lined our search page to not only include vendors with a map, but you’ll now see local events and promotions on the right hand side. This improvement makes search for local events and promotions (deals/discounts) even easier.

In December we highlighted our Wedding Songs section. Selecting the right wedding music is so important to your wedding day. At WeddingWire, we compiled a categorized database of wedding songs. But we’ve taken it a step further to include actual music samples and music videos from YouTube. You are also able to see the lyrics as well so you really know what you’re getting with each song. And if you don’t see a song you think should be there, suggest it to us!

As with each issue, we feature tops posts from our Community section along with events and promotions. Click below to see our December Newsletter exclusively for WeddingWire members.

Well, I’m not teaching the lesson, but students at George Mason University are learning the in’s and out’s of wedding planning through a course specifically on wedding planning. Maggie Daniels has been teaching the class since 2005 with about 100 students registered for the class. They learn everything from hairstyles to crisis management to planning on a budget.

I think it’s great to see students learning subjects like this b/c while some students may be learning for fun, others find business opportunities in these types of skills.

A new study by comScore posted by the Center for Media Research revealed that people really do care about other’s experiences, so much that 1 in 4 people reported reading reviews online. While this particular study targeted mainstream consumer services such as restaurants, hotels, and travel, it speaks to broader trend that consumers are willing to learn from other people’s successes or mistakes. When it comes to weddings, people really care what newlyweds have to say about their wedding vendors. Community forums on other wedding sites have thrived for years as engaged couples are constantly seeking out advice from newlyweds.

wedding vendor reviewsAt WeddingWire, we recognize this trend. We continue to collect thousands of reviews from newlyweds all across North America so that engaged couples can seek advice from newlyweds in a systematic manner. This is also why we developed our community areas to be more interactive allowing engaged couples to seek advice from other couples, newlyweds and even wedding vendors.

Try searching our catalog for vendor reviews today.
