Happy 8th Birthday to WeddingWire!

Posted by Alexandra on May 01, 2015

Today marks eight years since the launch of WeddingWire—and that’s certainly cause for celebration! In honor of the occasion, we thought it would be fun to look back at the some of the wedding trends we’ve seen and loved over the past eight years. Let’s take a walk down memory lane…

2007: Marie Antoinette Inspired Details – This trend was influenced, we suspect, by the eponymous movie premiered previous year. Chateaus and historic mansions were the venues of choice in 2007, and brides accessorized with cameo jewelry and layered pearls. Decor was all about shabby chic china, Baroque tabletop accents, neoclassical furniture, opulent feathers, and feminine pastels mixed with lots of gold. For dessert, gilded fondant cakes or French confections like macarons, petits fours, and croquembouche were a must.

2008: Gowns with Pick Up Skirts – The glam ballroom style was huge in 2008, and pick ups were a perfect way to give wedding gowns that full, fairytale look brides were after. Pick up detailing works beautifully with satin and taffeta, two favored fabrics that year.

2009: Eco-Friendly Details – Environmentally conscious weddings certainly haven’t gone out of style (and we hope they never do!), but they were especially hot in 2009. Couples used recycled paper for their stationery, decorated with repurposed objects (think glass bottle vases and newspaper poms), incorporated moss, succulents, herbs, and greenery into their arrangements, and thanked their guests with plantable seed favors.

2010: Birdcage Veils – The vintage wedding trend came into the spotlight in 2010, and brides everywhere seemed to be swapping traditional lengths of tulle and lace for crops of Russian netting. These statement pieces were typically embellished with feather fascinators or beaded appliques for an extra shot of retro glam.

2011: Rosettes – This pretty three-dimensional design adorned everything from bridal gowns, shoes, and sashes to boutonnieres, table linens, and buttercream cakes! The sculptural, floral-inspired swirls added instant romance and texture.

2012: Creative Catering – Mini foods were a huge deal in 2012. Everything from tacos and pizzas to ice cream cones and pies were downsized and to cute, bite-size versions of themselves. Soup shooters, shrunken sliders, grilled cheese finger sandwiches, petite salad cups. Interactive food stations (make your own s’mores, build your own crostinis), food trucks, treat cones, elaborate dessert bars, and candy displays were all the rage. And don’t forget cocktails! The signature beverage trend also hit an all-time high around this time.

2013: Rustic Chic Details – As barns, farms, and ranches became more popular settings for weddings, it only made sense that organic decor and country chic details came into play. Natural materials like burlap, birch bark, barn wood, and grapevine took center stage. We saw lots brides carrying colorful wildflower bouquets, bridesmaids rocking cowboy boots, and guests sipping cocktails from mason jars. Haystacks took the place of traditional ceremony seats and everyone went crazy for chalkboard signs.

2014: Unstructured Bouquets – Big, lush, garden style bouquets took over last year and we don’t see them going anywhere soon. Brides are loving that romantic, unpolished, free-spirited look. Symmetry and perfection is out; texture and creativity is in!
